Plusy: Shuttle just outside of SXM Airport takes you to the close-by but drivable distance to pick up your car. Always reserve your car prior to your trip for best price online at Thrifty.com, finding an online discount code for example 10% off. For insurance, if you have an American Express, sign up through AmX prior to your trip for a one-time charge of $24.95 on your American Express upon car rental charge; It covers everything except Liability, for the duration of your rental time (ours was 2 weeks) and safely decline Thrifty's daily insurance charges. (If you think your credit card covers you automatically, you may be very surprised just how little those free included coverage actually covers!) Bring a Contract copy with you. Thrifty is pleasant and they have decent prices. You can find slightly cheaper deals elsewhere, but beware of the extra charges others will likely add on.
Minusy: It is customary in St Maarten to sign a blank credit card receipt, just in case the car is damaged or stolen, etc. But they all do this. After numerous years of rentals through Thrifty, we've never had any add-ons we did not expect.
